Dussehra, also called Vijayadashami, falls on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. Coming after the nine nights of Navratri, it is celebrated as the victory of good over evil. In North and Central India it is remembered as Lord Rama's victory over Ravana, while in many other regions it is linked to Goddess Durga's victory over Mahishasura. Here is a simple guide to what you can do on Dussehra, which traditional upay are common, and what to keep in mind.
Dussehra 2026: date and timing
According to the panchang, Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami are on Monday, 19 October, and Vijayadashami is on Tuesday, 20 October. For New Delhi, the afternoon (aparahna) puja window is given as roughly 1:14 pm to 3:30 pm. Timings can shift a little by city, so check your local panchang or ask a family elder, a trusted pandit, or the Bhopa or Bhagat in your village.
Why Dussehra is considered important
In tradition, Dussehra is a day for fresh beginnings. It is counted among the very auspicious days, so many families start something new today: a course, a vehicle, a purchase, a project. The thought behind it is simple. Just as nine days of sadhana end in victory, we too can take a step toward winning over our own weaknesses. It is not a guarantee of results, only a good moment to begin with a positive mind.
Shastra puja and honouring your tools
Many homes and communities perform shastra puja or tool puja on Vijayadashami. Farmers clean and worship their ploughs and tools, shopkeepers their scales and account books, students their books and pens, and craftspeople their instruments. The feeling is gratitude for whatever puts food on your table. Clean them in the morning, apply roli and rice, light a lamp, and quietly say thank you.
A simple puja at home
Bathe in the morning and clean your prayer corner. Light a lamp before the images of Goddess Durga and Lord Rama. Offer flowers, roli, rice and whatever bhog your family follows. If you sowed barley sprouts during Navratri, a few shoots are traditionally shared with family members as prasad. After the puja, sit together and share the prasad. What matters most is sincerity and a calm mind, not show.
Simple upay traditionally followed on Dussehra
First, light a lamp at your main door in the evening, a symbol of light and a positive atmosphere at home. Second, if there is a Shami tree nearby, many people place a lamp near it, bow, and take blessings from elders. Third, giving food or clothes to someone in need is considered a good deed on this day; give only what you comfortably can. Fourth, share sweets or paan and use the day to sweeten relationships. If there is a rift with someone, send a small message.
The real message of Ravana Dahan
When you watch the effigy burn, do not look only at the fire. Ravana's ten heads are also understood as symbols of ten weaknesses such as ego, anger, greed, attachment and jealousy. Write down one habit you want to let go of, such as snapping at people, procrastinating, or gossiping, make a calm resolution, and let it go. A small promise you can keep is better than a big one you cannot.
Crowds and safety
Fairs and Ravana Dahan events get very crowded. Hold the hands of children and elders, keep a safe distance from firecrackers, and watch your phone and belongings. Faith works best with good sense.
What not to do
Do not spend money out of fear in the name of any puja or upay. Be careful of anyone who says that only if you do this exact thing on this day will your work succeed. Upay are for peace of mind and positivity, not for guaranteed results. For big decisions about health, law or money, always consult the right professional.
Keep your sadhana going with Devbhasha
The effect of Navratri sadhana lasts only if we turn it into a daily habit. In the Devbhasha app's Daily Sadhana you can set one small daily practice, and in the Dream Journal you can write down your dreams and, over time, notice patterns in your own mind.
If something is weighing on you, such as peace at home, a block at work, or a worry you cannot name, you can talk privately with a Sadhak on Devbhasha by chat or call. Our Sadhaks come from the folk Bhopa and Bhagat tradition and guide you in simple language, without fear. Wishing you a very happy Vijayadashami.
